Working with windows

Moving, resizing, title bar buttons, switching, minimizing, fullscreen

Title bar

The round colored buttons at the top left always show their symbol: × closes, − minimizes, the arrows maximize or restore. Double-click the title bar to maximize or restore.

Settings → Desktop & Dock → Windows changes, in both sessions and for new windows:

  • Buttons: on the left (close, minimize, maximize) or on the right as on Windows (minimize, maximize, close).
  • Button style: colored circles or monochrome icons.
  • Corner radius: from square (0) to very round (18 px).
  • Gaps around snapped windows: space left around windows snapped to a half, third or quarter (keyboard, dragging to an edge, Snap Layouts and Snap Assist), the same between windows as along the screen's edges. Maximized windows keep the whole screen.

Apps already open take the new buttons and corners when they are opened again.

Moving and resizing

  • Drag the title bar to move; drag an edge or corner to resize.
  • Hold Super and drag anywhere in a window with the left button to move it, or with the right button to resize it.
  • Drag a window to the left or right edge of the screen to snap it to that half, to the top to maximize it.

Switching

  • Alt+Tab (or Super+Tab) moves to the next window, Alt+Shift+Tab to the previous.
  • The window buttons in the top bar, the dock, and the overview (Super+W).

Minimize, maximize, fullscreen, close

KeysWhat it does
Super+MMinimize; the window gets its own icon in the dock
Super+↑ / ↓Maximize / restore
Super+FFullscreen on or off
Super+Q or Alt+F4Close
Ctrl+Shift+EscTask Manager, to end an app that doesn't respond

When the resolution changes

When a display's resolution or scale changes, floating windows keep their relative place and size on it instead of hanging off the screen; maximized, snapped and fullscreen windows follow by themselves. Desktop widgets keep their places too.

Animations

In the Aurora session, windows fade and zoom as they open, close, minimize and come back. Settings → Appearance → Window animations turns them off (together with Files' transitions); Animations turns off every interface animation. See Desktop sessions.
