Locking, screen off and suspend

When the screen locks, turns off and the computer sleeps, and how to change it

Locking the screen

Press Super+L, use the lock button in the Aurora menu or the Control Center, or let it lock when idle. The lock screen (gtklock in Aurora's style) shows, straight on your current wallpaper, a big clock and the date, and under them your account picture (or your initial), your name and the password field: type the password and press Enter or the arrow. After 20 seconds without input only the clock stays; move the mouse or press a key to bring the rest back. A wrong password or Caps Lock shows as a small colored note under the field. Its background, and whether it shows your name and picture, are chosen in Settings → Appearance → Lock Screen. Your apps keep running.

On inactivity

aurora-idle watches for inactivity with swayidle and follows Settings → Power and Privacy & Security:

  • after the Screen blank delay (Settings → Power): the screen locks, if Automatic screen lock is on;
  • 15 seconds later: the screen turns off; moving the mouse or pressing a key turns it on;
  • after the Automatic Suspend delay (separately on battery and when plugged in): the computer suspends;
  • before suspending, the screen locks.

The live session never locks or suspends by itself.

Keep Awake

The Keep Awake tile in the Control Center stops screen blanking, locking and automatic suspend until you turn it off: for presentations, long downloads or reading.

Apps that hold off sleep

Video players and calls can ask the system not to sleep. When you choose Restart or Shut Down while an app is holding it off, Aurora says which app and offers Restart Anyway or Shut Down Anyway.
