Turning on Aurora AI

Where answers come from: a model on your computer, on your network, or a cloud provider

Aurora AI is off until you turn it on in Settings → AI. Nothing is downloaded and nothing is sent anywhere before that.

1. Choose where answers come from

This computer (private)
Download a model; it runs locally, even offline, and nothing leaves the computer. The model loads when you ask and unloads after 10 idle minutes. Suggested models:

It runs with llama.cpp's server, downloaded on demand and verified by checksum. A graphics card speeds it up when the driver supports Vulkan.
Your network
Ollama or LM Studio on this or another computer: choose OpenAI-compatible API and enter its address, for example http://192.168.1.20:11434/v1 for Ollama or http://192.168.1.20:1234/v1 for LM Studio (Ollama on this computer fills it in for the local one). Attachments are allowed with these, since nothing leaves your network.
A cloud provider
Anthropic Claude, or an OpenAI-compatible service (OpenAI, Google Gemini, Mistral, OpenRouter, Groq). Paste your API key; it is kept in your keyring.

API keys are billed per use by the provider, separately from a Claude Pro/Max or ChatGPT Plus subscription, which other apps can't use. To use a subscription, install Claude Code or Codex from Dev Hub → AI Assistants: they sign in with your plan.

2. Choose where it helps

Each place has its own switch in Settings → AI. See Where Aurora AI helps.

3. Languages

It answers in the language you write in and follows “reply in Italian” whatever the system language. You can also fix one language for answers and one for dictation (or let it detect), and download a reading voice for any of 19 languages.

Privacy

  • With a model on your computer, nothing is sent anywhere.
  • Files and photos you attach are only sent to a model on your computer or your network, never to a cloud provider.
  • A chat that used private attachments can't continue with a cloud provider: start a new chat.
  • Chats are saved on this computer.
